A trip Houston means food on top of food. Drinks on top of drinks and a little razzle dazzle to top it all off. The traditions are out of the window and new things are being put together on a daily basis.
One of their busiest and best places is the Turkey Leg Hut. This Black owned establishment has been around since 2015 and has gained an unlimited amount of customers who don’t mind waiting in line. They’re even dubbed the #1 Restaurant in Houston! From celebrities to regulars alike, everyone wants a piece of what the Turkey Leg Hut has. Clearly I was ready to join this line and get into what Turkey Leg Hut had to offer.
From the outside you can see an abundance of tents with tables and chairs for their patio seating. They also have a bar where you can order daiquiris, mimosas and other intoxicants while you’re waiting in line to order.
Inside there is ample seating with exposed lighting making it easy to see your food. They also offer hookah and provide TVs for viewing pleasure.
Now for the food; Turkey Leg Hut does a spin on the traditional smoked turkey leg, but I’ll get into that later. Their style is southern, cajun creole so the menu is stacked with different spins on things you’d find in Louisiana.
I started off with the Jerk Chicken Tacos, because why wouldn’t I? The toasted flour tortillas are filled with spicy mango pico de gallo, grilled jerk chicken, cheese and jerk sauce. You get three tacos and they are stuffed to the max so expect some to fall out the back. In my opinion it’s not a real taco if the filling can stay inside. The jerk sauce was on point and had just the right amount of spice, flavor balance.
Next up was the fried fish basket. The basket came with two large catfish filets, battered and deep fried. They come with seasoned waffle fries as well. What can I say? The Turkey Leg Hut knows how to season and fry some fish! If you’re a catfish lover, you’ll appreciate this fish basket like no other.
Okay, that ends my time at TLH. Sike! You already know I wasn’t coming here for just tacos and catfish. This place is called Turkey Leg Hut after all. They have eight different ways you can try their turkey legs. From flavored to stuffed, you’ll find one you love. I decided to try the Florentine Turkey Leg and although everything I had before was exactly how it should be, this turkey leg was the best thing I may have had all week. The Florentine is a Famous Turkey Leg (slow smoked turkey leg prepared with secret ingredient and seasoning) with succulent jumbo shrimp, red onions, mushrooms and spinach. They finish it off with their cajun Alfredo sauce and Parmesan cheese. Say what now? Yes, all that is on a turkey leg that is falling off the bone from the moment you touch it. The flavor is unbelievable and I had no doubt in my mind as to why the line was long, this explained everything.
In addition to all the lovely food to choose from you can also get some special drinks you probably would’ve never dreamed of. They provide certain drinks in whole bottles of Crown, watermelons and massively huge wine glasses! Turkey Leg Hut definitely knows how to make their patrons have a good experience and I don’t see them losing the title of #1 restaurant in Houston anytime soon.
