I know you’re wondering what “‘ono grinds” means. It means “delicious food” in Hawaiian and that’s the best way to describe my dining experience at Kihei Caffe located in South Maui. This island is full of ‘ono grinds and beautiful views.
Kihei Caffe was established in 1998 and has since become a staple on the island. It’s located in the Kalama Park Village Shopping center. This place stays busy but don’t be discouraged, the line moves fast. They serve breakfast and brunch from 6am to 2pm daily. You can see beautiful palm trees from the outdoor patio. The interior is rather small but still full of character. The indoor seating features patio style furniture. Kihei Caffe’s menu can be clearly seen on screens which is an upgrade from their former chalk boards.
All right, food time. Kihei has a nice selection of breakfast favorites but with flare. I started with the Atkins Omelette. This contains eggs, Portuguese sausage, cheese, ham and bacon. The omelette comes with sliced tomatoes but I subbed those out for fried potatoes. Let me tell you, Kihei Caffe definitely knows how to make an omelette. It was a nice size and almost had me full.. almost.

Although that was filling you know I can’t just get one thing. Next up was the blackened fish and eggs special. This dish consists of daily fish selections seasoned and grilled with two eggs any style, home fries and a biscuit. Now this one should’ve taken me out. The fish was flavored and grilled perfectly. It was also fresh, as it should be.

The last thing I tried was the fried catfish and eggs. More fish and eggs? Why not. This entree features catfish your way, two biscuits with sausage gravy, two eggs and grits. Everything about this dish is hitting. From the sausage gravy to the fried catfish I have zero complaints and many praises.

When being in Hawaii, eating seafood is a must. This isn’t the place to eat burgers and fries. Eating local with locals in a restaurant minus the frills was a nice experience. If you’re ever in South Maui make it a point to visit Kihei Caffe before you start your beach filled day or explore the shops in the plaza.
